George Goggins, opens a clinic with his girlfriend to teach patients advanced sexual techniques. Hollywood seems not to have been interested in the story. Comfort was brilliant and multitalented, but there was a certain pat, self-satisfied idealism to much of his nonscientific work.

The original drawings of one of the most famous beards and other associated hairy bits, the illustrations for the bestseller The Joy of Sex, to be displayed for the first time at the Institute of Sexology exhibition at the Wellcome Collection, London. Despite being banned in many countries, including Ireland, and booksellers and librarians refusing to stock it in many states in the US, the book sold more than 10m copies. The black-and-white line drawings by Chris Foss were based on photographs he took of a man he knew well: his colleague Charles Raymond, who was responsible for the colour illustrations. They had first tried using paid models, but found them too expensive and inflexible, so Raymond volunteered to pose for the photographs with his wife, Edeltraud. The couple later recalled it as extremely hard work, particularly since the strikes and power cuts of that year meant the lights could go out at any moment. The exhibition deals mainly with scientists and anthropologists who specialised in sex, including Sigmund Freud , Alfred Kinsey — one photograph shows him giving a lecture in California that had to be moved to a basketball stadium to accommodate the 9, students — and the husband and wife team of William Masters and Virginia Johnson. Forty years ago, a London publisher was working on a groundbreaking sex manual - a "gourmet guide" to sexual pleasure, with copious and detailed illustrations. But how could this be done tastefully and legally? Think of The Joy of Sex and chances are your mind will drift to an image of a man with a bushy beard and a woman with hairy armpits. It's not a photograph, but the nearest thing to it in pen and ink.
An updated edition was released in September The Joy of Sex spent eleven weeks at the top of the New York Times bestseller list and more than 70 weeks in the top five — The original intention was to use the same approach as such cook books as The Joy of Cooking , hence section titles include "starters" and "main courses". The book features sexual practices such as oral sex and various sex positions as well as bringing "further out" practices such as sexual bondage and swinging to the attention of the general public. The original version was illustrated with a mixture of classical Indian and Japanese erotica and specially commissioned illustrations by Chris Foss black-and-white line drawings and Charles Raymond colour paintings. These two artists based their work on photographs taken by Chris Foss, of Charles Raymond and his wife. The illustrations have become somewhat dated, mainly because of changes in hairstyles. Both the illustrations and text are titillating as well as illustrative, in contrast to the bland, clinical style of earlier books about sex. More recent editions feature new artwork, and added text emphasizing safer sex. Newer versions reversed previously-supportive positions on topics such as swinging, due to extensive textual changes made at the height of the s AIDS panic.
